I feel so bad for New Yorkers. They had a beautiful Ferrari, and in the blink of an eye it was replaced by a rusty old jalopy. Their beloved Ferrari was stolen from them by eleven opportunistic liars, aided and abetted by a corrupt Attorney General, a jealous, conniving Lt. Governor, and a sniveling, cowardly State Assembly.
What a difference a year makes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Andrew Cuomo was a beacon of hope to millions of people all over the world through his daily briefings. His commitment to providing clear, factual information from medical experts on a daily basis was unprecedented. With his brilliant mind and incredible work ethic, he constantly updated information as the science evolved in the early days of the pandemic, providing comfort to a frightened public. He was the de facto President of the U.S.A., when there was no real leader, while the other guy persistently denied the facts about COVID-19 and claimed it was all a hoax. No one worked harder to protect the public from this insidious virus than Governor Andrew Cuomo. World leaders were asking for his advice on how they could manage the out of control virus. So, despite working 24/7 keeping New Yorkers safe, not sleeping for 111 days, he found the time to write a book offering valuable information and advice which, in turn, saved even more lives all over the world. How was this great man rewarded for his devotion to the people of New York? He was stabbed in the back and railroaded out of office by the most ludicrous and baseless accusations I’ve ever heard. He was afforded no due process, no opportunity to defend himself in a court of law. Yet nearly four million voters were instantly disenfranchised by a group of lying, scheming con artists with blind ambition and zero talent. Andrew Cuomo loves New York with all of his heart and soul. Andrew Cuomo is New York. And they just broke his heart.
“New York loves all of you. Black and white and brown and Asian and short and tall and gay and straight. New York loves everyone. That’s why I love New York. It always has, it always will. And at the end of the day, my friends, even if it is a long day, and this is a long day, love wins. Always” – Governor Andrew M. Cuomo
This whole tragic episode has become very personal for me, because my own dear father’s career was also destroyed by false allegations against him. My father was a brilliant, well-respected man, an ordained minister, a charismatic speaker, a skilled psychotherapist, and a lover of music and poetry. He was a man who lived an extraordinary life. He was a founding member of Christian Counselling Services in Toronto and devoted his life to helping people. No one was ever turned away because they couldn’t afford to pay. But it took just one unstable woman making a false accusation against him, and his career was destroyed. I know without a shadow of a doubt that my father was innocent, because I worked in his office at the time. My desk was just on the other side of the wall from his very small office. If anything untoward had been going on in there, I would have heard something. I would have seen something. Nevertheless, her baseless accusation was all that was needed for his jealous colleagues to demand his resignation.
I find it shameful that Andrew Cuomo is not being lauded for his 40 plus years of devoted public service. The people of New York have lost a great leader. I hope and pray that he will be back in 2024, but even if he chooses not to run for office again, we will never forget him and the impact he had on all our lives. I think he might be able to make even more of an impact as a private citizen. Like the Count of Monte Cristo, he may go away for a time, but he will return stronger than ever! Then, beware all those who betrayed him! There will be a reckoning!
